Ridges Sanctuary

Two Thousand years ago Lake Michigan reached further inland covering the Ridges Sanctuary. Wave action and strong winds left large deposits of sand which created The Ridges. Today these Ridges are 7 miles of hiking trails that actually follow and cross the crests of abandoned shorelines. Delicate wildflowers and threatened plants find their home here. Some are true Boreal forest species. Throughout the year, over 25 native orchids bloom in The Ridges. Our guests enjoy the spring and summer flowers adjacent to the sandy beach. Trailing Arbutus lends a sweet fragrance to Mother's Day guests, while Yellow and Showy Lady Slipper orchids nod colorfully in sun-speckled forest openings in early summer.
